A Night At The Rodeo: Fort Worth Stockyards

Rodeo is somewhat controversial in the US. Some blame it for being another form of animal cruelty, others just see it as a symbol of redneck culture. As a tourist in America I consider it wide spread folklore that truly can’t be missed especially as a visitor in Texas. So we went to the Fort Worth Stockyards, we attended the rodeo show and yes we saw patriotism, sexism, shocking calf roping. But we honestly had too much fun to care. Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Hiking Big Room Trail

Carlsbad Caverns is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Southwestern USA. Located in the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico, this fabulous cavern is an unforgettable scenery through one of the largest “chambers” in the world, the Big Room. What makes Carlsbad Caverns a fun place to visit is the self-guided tour; it is indeed possible to take a (long) hike without a ranger inside the cavern. This allows visitors to explore the cavern at their own pace – unlike in Mammoth Cave National Park. Continue reading “Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Hiking Big Room Trail”

Vegas for frugalists

Of all American experiences, visiting Las Vegas is one of the most incompatible with frugal travel. Pandemonium for penny-pinching people, a challenge for frugal people. What does it mean to be frugal? I separate it from being “stingy” as most often real stingy people don’t even want to engage in activities, so not even visit Vegas or experience the casino. Working at an Organic Farm in Oregon

We’re back! Henri and I are alive and happy but have been busy. We signed up to start Wwoofing at a farm in Medford, Oregon during the summer and ended up staying two months with our hosts. Meanwhile, I got a new consulting gig that is keeping me busy three days a week. Everything combined left me with zero time for blogging. Now that we’ve left the farm for the San Francisco Bay Area after this rewarding experience, I wanted to talk a bit about what we did there and how it changed our perception about food and farming. Backpacking For The First Time in Grand Teton National Park

We love hiking and this is what we do when we’re not working or chilling, but we usually only do long 10-15-mile day hikes. In Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming), we raised the bar and spent two days hiking with one night in the wilderness! One tiny night seems like nothing, but for us it was kind of a big deal —last time I had trekked over several days was in 2003 in Peru with a group and donkeys carrying my stuff (it’s cheating), and Henri had just never done anything like this. We were lucky to try this in some of America’s most beautiful mountains with the best mentors in the world. Continue reading “Backpacking For The First Time in Grand Teton National Park”
